about

Common Tone

Starts with 7/8 (2+3+2) piano ostinato.
The melody is scored for bass and sax together, breaking the dogma for instrumental roles, somewhat.
The 1st part has complimentary musical ideas i.e. antecedent and consequent phrases …There’s a strong sense of symmetry and consequently balance. Then the second part has an extended arpeggiaic melody (by alto sax) over frequently changing harmonies that voice lead in contrary motion and have one common-tone from consecutive chords… hence the title... The melody here is like a run on sentence, contrasting the balanced melodic symmetry of the first part, before reaching an apex on the last note.
