Schmaltz is all about the groove. In my mind the key to groove is to have more than one beat happening simultaneously or at least implying that….so that subdivision of the beat is present (at least in the musicians playing it). This allows for precision with the bigger beat . Here we’re in beat cycles of 13. You can feel 13/4 and 13/2 simultainiously. When you give this sort of baseline and groove to a rhythm section like this it more than often results in a pretty funky and fat groove. This track also has a slew of woodwinds and strings on it, which were scored after the fact (after the band recorded the track). This way I was able to emphasize the dynamics and magic that happened live with wide pallet of orchestral colors.
